What Is an AEO Checker? What It Measures (and What It Does Not)

AEO Score EditorialUpdated September 10, 2026

An AEO checker is a tool that scores a URL or draft for how extractable it is for AI answer engines — typically a 0–100 on-page score plus a dimension breakdown (direct answers, structure, schema, and similar). It does not query ChatGPT or Perplexity to count citations, and it is not an 'AEO rank checker' for a position in an engine that does not publish ranks. Use it to find weak spots you control. A high score means the page is easier to lift and attribute, not that an engine will cite you.

What does an AEO checker actually check?

It reads the page (or pasted draft) and scores on-page signals that make a passage liftable: a direct answer near the heading, question-shaped structure, named entities, schema in the HTML, and related extractability checks. Our free AEO score checker returns eight dimensions and the top fixes. That is the same job described in what an AEO score is.

The useful output is the breakdown, not the headline. A 72 with no schema is a different edit from a 72 with buried answers. Treat the checker like a linter: run it, fix the lowest dimension, re-run.

Because it is on-page and deterministic, it is fast and repeatable. That is also its limit: it cannot see whether GPTBot is blocked, whether the domain is trusted, or whether the answer is true.

  • Input: a live URL or a draft.
  • Output: extractability readiness, usually 0–100 plus dimensions.
  • Does not count live citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews.
  • Does not assign a rank inside an answer engine.

How is that different from an AEO rank checker?

People search 'aeo rank checker' because SEO tools taught us to look up a position. Answer engines do not publish a stable #1–#10 for a query the way Google's classic results do. A tool that implies a ChatGPT rank is either approximating something else or overselling.

If you need to know whether you appear in answers, that is citation or appearance monitoring on a frozen question list — a different instrument from an on-page checker. Keep the two jobs separate so a readiness score cannot be mistaken for a win in the engine.

Search Engine Land's AI-crawler guidance is about access (can the bot fetch you). An AEO checker assumes the HTML can be read and asks whether the answer is shaped to extract. Access first, then score.

How should you use a checker in a real workflow?

Score before you publish, then again after you edit. The fastest lifts are almost always a standalone lead under each heading and schema that exists in the served HTML, not in a client-only overlay.

Then check the things the score cannot see: robots and bot access, server-rendered copy, and claims that match real sources. Microsoft's writing on inclusion in AI search answers likewise treats structured, extractable formats as practice — not as a promise that a given engine will quote you.

Paste a URL into the score checker, then read AEO vs SEO if you need the layering: SEO still has to work; the checker is the extractability pass on top.

  1. 1Paste the production URL or the draft into an AEO checker.
  2. 2Fix the weakest dimensions; re-score until you clear your own bar (many teams use 80+ as extractability-ready).
  3. 3Confirm AI crawlers can fetch the HTML and that schema is not JavaScript-only.
  4. 4If you need appearance in live answers, measure that separately — the checker will not do it.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AEO checker the same as an SEO checker?+

No. SEO checkers look at ranking, crawl, and classic on-page SEO. An AEO checker looks at extractability for answer engines. You usually need both: a page can rank and still be hard to quote.

Does a high score mean ChatGPT will cite me?+

No. It means the page is easier to extract. Citation still depends on crawl access, accuracy, and authority the score does not measure.

Can I check a draft before it is live?+

Yes, if the tool accepts pasted markdown or HTML. A URL check additionally sees what crawlers would fetch, including rendering problems a paste can hide.
