In SEO conversations, AEO stands for answer engine optimization: writing and structuring pages so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and similar — can extract a clear answer and attribute it to you. It is not a new ranking factor Google has named, and it does not replace search engine optimization. You still need a crawlable, relevant page; AEO is the extractability layer on top. Being extractable is necessary and not sufficient for a citation.
What does AEO stand for in SEO?
AEO is answer engine optimization. People type 'AEO in SEO' when they want the full form and how it sits next to the work they already do for Google. The short version: SEO is still how you become findable in search; AEO is how you become quotable in an AI answer that may sit above or instead of a list of links.
You will also see GEO (generative engine optimization) used as a cousin term. Treat the labels as overlapping practitioner language, not as ISO standards. What matters is the job: a liftable, accurate answer on a page a bot can fetch.
For a side-by-side of goals, overlap, and divergence, see AEO vs SEO. This page is the meaning-in-context version of that question.
What does AEO change on a page you already optimized for SEO?
Mostly structure and proof. Open each section with a standalone answer to the heading. Use headings people would actually ask. Keep paragraphs to one idea. Put Article or FAQPage schema in the HTML Googlebot and AI crawlers fetch — not only in a client-side overlay.
Microsoft's notes on inclusion in AI search answers and Search Engine Land's AI-crawler guide both point at structured, reachable content. That is practice, not a published 'AEO score' from Google.
Do not strip the SEO foundation to chase extractability. A blocked, slow, or off-intent page fails both jobs. AEO is finish work on a page that already deserves to exist.
- Direct-answer leads under question-led headings.
- Server-rendered HTML a bot can read without executing your app shell.
- Named entities and schema in the fetched HTML.
- No invented statistics to look 'authoritative' to a model.
How do you know if the AEO layer is working?
On-page, use an AEO checker or AEO score as a readiness bar. That tells you whether the page is shaped to extract. It does not tell you whether an engine cited you this week.
Appearance in live answers is a second measurement: a frozen list of questions, checked on named engines, with cited versus named kept separate. Do not read a score lift as a citation win.
Google's AI-features documentation says supporting links in AI Overviews come from snippet-eligible Search results. That is still Search. AEO work that also helps classic SEO (clear answers, titles, crawl access) is the overlap; it is not a back door around indexing.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO a Google ranking factor?+
Google has not published a ranking factor named AEO. AI Overviews and AI Mode use Search systems to retrieve supporting pages. Ordinary Search eligibility still applies.
Is AEO replacing SEO?+
No. It is a layer. Crawlability, relevance, and quality still decide whether you are in the index those AI features read from.
What is the difference between AEO in SEO and GEO?+
Both are practitioner labels for making content usable in AI answers. Use whichever your team already says, then define the actual checks — access, extractability, measured appearance — so the acronym does not become the strategy.
